Master Gardener Kent Phillips' talks about his favorite gardening tools. Watch what he thinks are the best tools to use in the garden to help your vegetables grow. CONCENTRATED TRANSPLANT SOLUTION: Kent dissolves 40 tablespoons (2 and 1/2 cups) of fertilizer in his 5 gallon bucket of water. BECAUSE: The fertilizer's manufacturer calls for 1 tablespoon of fertilizer for every 1 gallon of water. The syphon dilutes the transplant solution by using only 1 part solution for every 16 parts water. To equal everything out, Kent would need to put in 16 tablespoons of fertilizer for every 1 gallon of water in his bucket. Since the bucket holds 5 gallons of water, the regular rate would call for 80 tablespoons of fertilizer. However, Kent only wants a 50% solution, so he puts in half: 40 tablespoons in his 5 gallon bucket.
